The Disappearing Glass Ceiling...

The results are making their way through the birding world... As low as 100,000 million and as high as 1 billion wild birds are killed each year from crashing into windows, including mirrored skyscrapers.

A billion is appalling... 100,000 million is no better. Mind you, this is in addition to natural predators.

The world is losing almost 5% of the wild bird population every year.

Are you as shocked as we are? What's happening?

Birds cannot distinguish between reflected images and the real deal. Those reflected landscapes, trees, skies, and clouds look perfectly normal to wild birds.

Solutions for residential window strikes are discussed in The Disappearing Looking Glass. They're all simple and affordable, and easily within the abilities of average home owners and apartment dwellers.

But the really lethal conditions are those beautiful glassed and mirrored commercial buildings and skyscrapers during Spring and Fall migrations. Skyscrapers can kill dozens of wild birds at a time, several times a day.

In contrast, residential conditions account for maybe one  lethal bird strike a day... and that's way above average.

Thankfully, glass companies are working diligently on new glass formulations. Also, many skyscrapers limit illumination at night.

In fact, look what a recent search for "bird friendly glass" produced... results are happening.

The world is blessed with many talented, caring individuals...  solutions are bound to come. A point in case... the City of Toronto, Canada has published some development guidelines for cities, or any community. We offer this timely and unique 46-page book as a FREE, no-strings-attached download. Toronto has taken big steps forward. Get yours right now... Bird Friendly Development Guidelines

In the meantime, think about joining an Audubon-type organization or a birding organization. Many of them are in the forefront of wildlife conservation and innovation.

Another thing we can do... protect and nurture the fortunate wild birds that miraculously make it through the gauntlet of glass and mirrors... and choose our gardens.

Check out the rest of the articles in the  All About The Care of Wild Birds navigation box in the left column. You'll find more information about preventing birds from flying into windows, as well as how to care for wild baby birds, feeding wild birds, wild bird food recipes, and more.

Here's hoping that during our lifetime there will be a resolution to the glass gauntlet. A time when glass ceilings no longer keep these amazing wild birds from their full potential.. or from blessing all of us with their tiny lives!
