Helianthus annuus L.
Common Sunflower

Available in a variety of colors and heights up to 10 feet tall. A true sun worshipper, its head follows the sun as it crosses the sky. Sunflowers require plenty of water and are known for literally sucking soil dry, which can be a problem for neighboring plants. Sow seeds in fertile, rich soil directly where they are to grow (vs. transplanting). Perfect for kids gardens because of the plant's sheer size and rapid growth. Dried seed heads are favorites of birds and butterflies. Petals and seeds are edible for us, too.
