Rendering Beef Fat Into
Suet For Wild Birds

Place beef fat in an over-sized pan... or use a
large electric skillet for best results.
It's extremely important that you don't rush
things... always use low heat.
(Overheated fat can catch fire!)
After the fat melts,
carefully pour it through fine cheesecloth into a
heat-proof container. (If there are any small bits of fat that
didn't melt, don't worry... just toss them out.)
Allow the melted fat to re-harden... either on
the counter top or in the refrigerator. (Make sure to keep it out of
the reach of children while it cools.)
Repeat this whole process 2 more times.
This last step is what raises the melting
point of the suet. This means that you can place it outside in
temperatures up to around 70°F before it starts to melt....
effectively extending the cool weather suet-feeding season by
several weeks.
Tip...
a good source for beef fat is a butcher. Some of them will even give
it to you... no charge!
CAUTION...
keep your kids out of the kitchen while doing this. In fact, keep
traffic in your kitchen to a minimum during this process.
