(1) This link takes you to the Patuxent Bird Identification InfoCenter. It is a huge list of scientific categories and names, and unless you are familiar with ornithological nomenclature it can be a nightmare to negotiate.

Here's a tip... use the find command.

  • Press Ctrl and F... a small box appears.
  • Type in all or a part of the common (or scientific name) of any bird, and you will go to it.
  • If it isn't the one you want, click the "next" button in the Find box for the next occurrence on the list for whatever you typed in.
  • When you find the one you want, click on it to go to a 3-column page (described above) for that bird species.

If this sounds too difficult or time-consuming, just use the "USA area" lists in Favorite Songbirds of the USA. Most of the research has been done for you... but you can still "tweak" a bit more information if you want.

More songbirds will be added to the lists on Favorite Songbirds of the USA... so bookmark the page (use the link at the bottom of that page) and check back often.

Remember to refresh the bookmarked page when you access it... after you click on the bookmarked link in "Your Favorites" and the page appears, click the refresh button to make sure you have the latest edition.

Hope this helps you become familiar with this really useful segment of the USGS website..
